A small ‘zero’ above a letter

In the Uthmani script of the Mushaf, a small symbol that looks like a zero (◌°) is placed above some letters. It signals that the letter is EXTRA — it is written but NOT pronounced. The exact rule depends on the SHAPE of the zero.
